J.W. Thompson collection of photographs and slides of Washington State, 1950-1968.

The J.W. Thompson Collection consists of 2 sections; photographs and slides from J.W. Thompson. The photographs are primarily 8 x 10 inch sepia or black and white photos. There are approximately 115 photos of a wide variety of subjects of the Pacific Northwest. The collection includes photographs of Toppenish turkeys, petrified logs, and some depicting the life and customs of some of the Native Americans of the Pacific Northwest. The collection also includes a catalog titled: "Black and White Enlargements of Indian of Washington Today, Northwest Scenery and Historic Spots, and Indian Pictographs and Washington Industries" which is a listing of photos that could be ordered from J.W. Thompson in Seattle, WA. The slide collection consists of two sections: slide sets and a notebook of 32 slide sleeve pages of 20 slides each. The slides sets were photographed, produced and distributed by J.W. Thompson and a copy of Thompson's catalog for the slides. The sets were designed to be used in the classroom teaching social studies and science. The collection includes 4 slide sets from the Washington Industries Series and the scripts that accompany the sets. The set of early sea explorers are from the paintings of Parker McAllister, an artist for the Seattle Times. The two slide sets of Native Americans of Washington were photographed by J.W. Thompson. There are a small number of slides that were independent of the teaching sets that include Art from the Maryhill Museum and a few unidentified slides that may include a slide of J.W. Thompson. Many of the Native Americans in the photographs and slides are identified by name. There are approximately 640 slides in the notebook that are unlabeled but do have numbers on the slides.
